Paul Gauguin in Tahiti
May, 2008
mixed technique
Paul Gauguin was a master of color and the speculation and research he applied in his painting is often overshadowed by the gossip about his personal life. One should remember that he fought the French exploitation of the Islands vigorously and paid for his moral stand! No one's life is as simple as the biographers tend to instill.

The Beach at Brela

acrylic and more
This grew out of a drawing I made in Croatia a year and a half ago. The protagonist is a voyeur who surveyed the women in a frighteningly predatory manner. Fortunately his 'victims' were unaware of his behavior. The fact that this occurred in a land that saw violence agaianst women on a horrifying scale added to my sense of disappointment with our human failure to progress at a level beyond the other animals. No, we are really worse.

MAIDOFF'S MAIDOFFS,
I have been urged by a friend to make hugh quality digital and archivial impressions of some of the paintings that I keep in my own collection, ones that I just do not wish to sell. The editions are limited to ten and have shown two of them in my show in November in Milan and I am showing more of these for the first time in Orvieto together with the originals.
I have printed them on Fabriano Rosaspina paper and slightly smaller tha the originals so that the fact that these are not originals is clear. I have found these really gratifying as a way to give away the image and still have the original "totem"

oil on linen 95 x 95 cms
This is dedicated to my daughter Natasha who is about to give birth to her second son ( yes we know it is a boy) this month.
As in much of my work the facts of my personal life are central and in this picture I celebrate the joy, the mystery and the rituals with which we surround this miracle.
It could also be titled " Tha Dance of Life"
Family Ritual

Thinking about the ways families pass on habits, cultural ones and I was also considering my own origens. A reflection too about how it all has changed. The generations are in a new order of relationships, mostly for the better since the seven decades ago when I was growing up in a "mittel-european" family. I have a contact with my children and grandchildren of a much more intimate and playfull nature than those times permitted.

As the few of you who come to this site must know I love to review the whole absurd part of making art, for whom and about what?
For you and for myself and about the content - we all ultimately are musing about, does art make any sense and a small answer is that as long as we still are trying to speak to one another it must all be about the miracle or accident of existence.

Another phase in the picture I started two weeks ago before I left for Portugal and my 2 shows in Porto. It was a wonderful 10 days in the 2 galleries and with my friends there. Please note that the correct dates for this picture are March 2005.
